Small note from Deb: if you’re not interested in merch, do still stick around for the newsletter after THIS one, because it will feature an exclusive extract from ‘Empire Of Grass’.
If you ARE interested in merch, YOU HAVE 24 HOURS BEFORE ANYONE ELSE IN THE WORLD…
We’ve been talking about doing merchandise for several years. We finally decided to do something about it.
It took a concerted and strenuous effort by Deb and several of our closest Tad-reader friends – God, we love the Scrollbearers! – to get us to this point, and even though I’m always nervous about self-advertising, this definitely deserves attention. So here we go.
We’ve made Things. MERCHANDISE Things. And you can see them at Indiegogo – ‘Tad Williams Is Making Merch’ – button below… But aren’t they wonderful?
So far, the Things we’ve made come entirely from the ‘Memory, Sorrow & Thorn’ and ‘Otherland’ series. We shared a lot of ideas, and of course wanted to make EVERYTHING, but since we couldn’t do that we’ve concentrated on a few quality items, each one crafted with personal care and the attentive hands of love. (Except for those items we had made at knock-off factories deep in the swampy Wran, where there are no labor laws and you can even hire ghants.)
We have been gifted many times over the years with wonderful presents that readers and friends have hand-made for us, and that’s what inspired our campaign – that feeling of real things made carefully for real people. And who is more real to us than our readers?
Director Deb and our Scrollbearer Merchandise Mavens brainstormed and worked hard to bring all this together. We’ve funded the first stages of the venture ourselves, the art and design, the proofing of jewelry, the production of pins. So your hard-earned money, should you choose to buy, will help to keep our children from starvation – or at least from having to eat bulk-buy ramen more than they already do.
We made an alliance with the Otherland Game people. Soon the Otherland tee shirts will live inside the game and even be available for purchase in Lambda Mall.
So despite my difficulties with self-advertising, and never being able to completely ignore my mother’s voice – “You’re a very nice person, Tad, but don’t get TOO full of yourself” – I really do want to say this loudly and clearly:
WE’VE MADE MERCHANDISE! WE ARE SELLING MERCHANDISE! AND IT’S ALL VERY COOL!
