I keep thinking, “These white people I argue with on the internet don’t REALLY think they’re the main victims of discrimination in the US, right? It’s just a stance.” Then they say something that proves they really do believe it and I can’t help wondering where they’ve been the last 500 years.

I largely agree, and it’s a mindset we see in the reactions to Ferguson as well — Unionists are horrified by violence against protesting black (and other color) citizens, Confederates are horrified by what they see as “unfair” criticism of the white power structure.
