Have an urge to post some comic book covers every now and then. Here’s the work of the wonderful Lou Fine. The character — the Red Bee! One of the weirdest heroes ever. He had a pet bee named Michael in his belt buckle, iirc. Not exactly America’s Favorite. But I love this cover more than life itself.
Been seeing Patrick Stewart on FB a lot today, which is good, because I really like Patrick Stewart. But it got me thinking. Everybody would probably agree that Ian McKellen has the best geek daily-double, Magneto and Gandalf, but what if you extend it to three roles? Stewart, after all, can boast not just Picard and Professor Xavier, but also Sejanus, one of the best villains in “I, Claudius”, a favorite among many of my generation of geekery.
Harrison Ford has to be considered the man to beat, though, since he has played three uncontested geek atom bombs, Han Solo, Indiana Jones, and Rick Deckard from Blade Runner.
Who else has an excellent geek icon pedigree? Sean Bean has Ned Stark, Boromir, and Sharpe, off the top of my head. Liam Neeson’s got a few. Hell, Michael Gambon was the Singing Detective -and- Dumbledore. And of the younger actors, with Depp you’d have to decide what his best three are, but Downey’s hard to beat as Tony Stark, Sherlock Holmes, and his uber-cult-geek turn in A Scanner Darkly, although it’s a character no one except serious PKDick fans would recognize by name.
Russell Crowe’s put together a pretty good list, too.
Now I’m starting to think about female actors. Helen Mirren? Played Prospero and the Queen of England and Jane Tennison. Cate Blanchett? Elizabeth the First and Galadriel. Pretty damn iconic.
Okay, now I’m going to have to stop, because I just keep thinking of more.

This Ganesha is dedicated to my friend Shivam Bhatt, who has had a week of amazing news. Congrats, dude!
It’s always difficult when people compare me unfavorably with other contemporary writers. It’s much easier when they use examples from earlier eras of fiction. Because then I can say, “Well, I may not be talented, but at least I’m not DEAD.”
The photo’s cool, but you need to watch this video. If I was rich, I would so totally build something like this in my yard.

I think the single universe is unlikely. I think we’re probably part of a larger structure which we can’t grasp yet. But we will.

Facebook Namecheck Time: Deb and I had a lovely evening on the Tiki Patio at buddy Teresa Marovich’s house. Hung with longtime chums Boris Zubov and Kerry Loewen and Kerry’s spouse Amber (and checked in by phone with Annamarie Holland Daniels and spouse Todd.) Good times had and also remembered, with many reminiscences of very, very bad behavior in youthful days. I’m so very, very glad I don’t have me for a kid.

I like this, too. I’m sure the very idea will make some people crazy with rage.

Just a heads-up. I get tons of requests to connect on LinkedIn, mostly from people I already know and like. I suspect these are auto-solicits, but just in case they’re not, I’m NOT on LinkedIn and I have no plan to be, so these just show up in my inbox and get (regreatfully) ignored. If you want to be in touch with me and Facebook friendage isn’t enough for some reason, pm me and I’ll give you my email. LinkedIn is a non-starter with me.
As someone who has long felt limited by giant-slug color availability (only comes in bright banana yellow) I rejoice.

Sad to hear about Jack Vance’s passing. A wonderful, wonderful writer. We’ve lost a great one.

Earliest I’ve finished my writing in a long time. Now I’ll have to think of something to do. Too bad there’s nothing except a thousand other things to take care of. Someday I’d like to be bored.
